Non-religious wedding readings — Adam Sandler from The Wedding Singer

Modern wedding readings

Not every couple is religious, so it’s a good thing there are plenty of non-religious wedding readings to choose from. Robert Fulghum wrote one of my favorites, called Union and Taylor Mali has another one of my favorites called, How Falling In Love Is Like Owning a Dog. Lots of times these readings can come from song lyrics, like Never Stop by Safety Suit, or even lines from movies.

Remember this scene from The Wedding Singer?  The song starts at 1:35. Most people love Adam Sandler.  His song lyrics work great to end a ceremony with because they’ll get everyone smiling and ready to celebrate.

Nonreligious wedding readings: Adam Sandler in the Wedding Singer
I wanna make you smile whenever you’re sad and carry you around when your arthritis is bad. Oh all I wanna do is grow old with you. I’ll get your medicine when your tummy aches, build you a fire if the furnace breaks.

Oh it could be so nice, growing old with you. I’ll miss you, kiss you, give you my coat when you are cold. Need you, feed you, even let ya hold the remote control. So let me do the dishes in our kitchen sink, put you to bed when you’ve had too much to drink. Oh it could be so nice, growing old with you. I wanna grow old with you.

This is a great reading to end ceremonies with, assuming your couple is laid-back. It gets people smiling and sets the tone for the celebration afterward. Should you sing it?  I’ve thought about singing it, but never want to bomb so probably not. I’ve heard one guest reader sing it at the end of a ceremony and he killed it! Everyone was laughing and he really did great, but unless you’re really confident in your singing ability, my suggestion is to find a good rhythm and tempo and read it instead.

Fun, nontraditional and nonreligious wedding readings can really help any ceremony shine. Wedding ceremonies are celebrations and it’s okay to have fun.  Somber and sincere isn’t the only way to do it.
